Most of us were sure that this day would come sooner than later. Finally it has come, thanks to the perseverance of the Nepalis people.

There were also many people dismissing the prospect of a republic Nepal. But this was inevitable because majority of Nepalis aspired for a democratic republic since long.

The road was bumpy and the ride was painful but we did get to where we wanted to go. From the brink of a civil war, we have made this transition in a relatively peaceful manner. It was always very hard a task to extinguish the fire of war. But the fire has been put off, swiftly, compared to other nations in similar circumstances. The country has overcome one difficult job. Now this is the start of another difficult job of nation building.

Of course there are doubters. One those who are determined to doubt. And another who doubt because of the difficult journey ahead. In no way, the picture is rosy. But now, Nepalis will have a completely new idea, a new way ,a new political setup to try new things. When old things don't work, you have to try new ways. And thats what the Nepalis have decided to do.

Optimists will hope for good things. Pessimist have every excuses to foresee doomsday . But this day is the beginning of a new era. Today the foundation stone for a just, peaceful, democratic, developed and prosperous Nepal will be laid. And it is the job of the Nepalis to build their future on it. Congratulations and best wishes to you all.

damn, this is such a historic moment -- nothing short of a fairytale if you ask me. i was/am always optimistic about nepal once we went past the nadir a couple of years ago. but to achieve something really positive of this magnitude and that too at a relatively faster pace than most of us had thought, is really really impressive. today is that day. after a long long time, finally...it's a feat!

the journey has just started though and there is a long way to go but we started at least and started on a positive note :D

btw, this is one of the better documentaries i have seen about nepal in recent times. it was made before the historical CA election but most of the things it says still applies.

I am happy to see the monarchy go. I have waited a long time for this day. The country has finally moved away from  a diminishing but  influential clique of people who were well positioned in society, some of whom were extremely arrogant, often high-handed and oppressive and acutely behind the times in recognizing the social and political change sweeping the country. History has shown that those who cannot move with the times, whether they be Ranas, Shahs, Congress, UML (and someday perhaps even the Maoists) will be cast aside by the tides of change.

I believe the social significance of this as large, if not larger, than the political one. For the first time in our history, the society at large and not one person or institution gets to define what it means to be a people and a nation. This rings true to the notion that the people of the country are the masters of their destiny even though many of us don't know how to read and write, are superstitious, fatalistic and have a tendency to take to the streets over any issue.

I am glad to see the end of the monarchy but I feel there are plenty of reasons to be concerned about the future of the country.  The biggest concern being the huge gap between Maoist rhetoric and political reality. The YCL is still running amuck and we now have a politically absurd situation of a government within a government and an army within an army. While ethnic aspirations both in the Terai and hills have wrongly been suppressed for far too long, the current crop of parties generate little confidence that they can solve these issues.

All in all I think this is a historic day for the country and don't want to take anything away from the occasion but far more important than celebrating a republic or wishing the King "goodbye"  is to keep our sights and focus on the problems facing the country.  Monarchy may be gone but poverty isn't gone. Mayhem and lawlessness are not  gone. The top-down elitist culture that has it's roots in the monarchy and pervades all aspects of our society isn't gone. These are the real evils facing the country and they will take a long time to go. Abolishing them is far more important than abolishing just the monarchy. I can only hope that with the parties no longer distracted by a scheming palace, they will finally get to focus on the issues that really matter to people like law and order, water, electricity, jobs, education, health care  etc.

Happy first Republic Day to Newuser, Loote, Captain and all celebrating Nepalis !

 

I am missing the euphoria of the night of 24^th April 2006, when I was so certain about the birth of the republic any minute. There has been some waiting fatigue and some developments that are making my personal celebration somewhat subdued. However I join all to celebrate and welcome republic Nepal.

 

Yet I can not help sharing this feeling that republic, my beloved, arrived today not alone but with somebody I am not fully familiar with. I was trying to put that in a shayari and this is what it became:

 

उल्टै सोधिन् प्रियतमले - किन भनेको ‘ओहो !’

मैले भने - तिमी त आयौ, तर साथमा को हो ?

 

Yesterday, we were celebrating the eve of republic in a small email group of friends. Here is my share. It has some solemn reflections that I could not hold.

This celebration should not be just about the end of the Monarchy only but also about the will of the people being followed. This is a major milestone that we have crossed as a nation. We have a long way to go in order to realize the real "Sundar Shanti ra Bishal Nepal" and that can be achieved by becoming a democratic republic which we are now.

If the government continually fails in the coming days, we shall all rise once again and clamor for freedom/justice even if that means sacrificing lives. Why the bravery, which runs in our blood as Gurkhas that helped to defend foreign nations, should not cause us to defend our own from undemocratic elements if such forces erupt?

Therefore, let's all hope for the best but also be prepared for the worst (if any of you should feel pessimistic).

Lets Celebrate Our New KING Prachanda

A lot of celebrations. Many smiles. But I want to pick Nepes shayari.

Why it took so long for congress and UML to identify king is a bad element?

Why Maoist main goal is ganatantra though once they were ready to accept king it there was constitutional election?

It seems this group is like a crowd in the word of Socrates. However these are elected ones.

But I take this as a change in the shake of change. I don't consider any step progressive unless that don't uplift lifestyle of public. Don't count loktantra,ganatantra,sanghyiatantra.....they are just new chowschows in colorful packets with upahar yojana. I want to see what they have to improve Nepal not the powerful king or powerful president.

 

Yay! Hurray! ….its really the beginning of a new era! Now the king will move out of the palace and two tribes, namely, Pushpa Pagal Dahal and Bitchyla Yami will move in and play Cupid in there! Hurray!

haha i see a celebration but not with full confidence by some hardcore republicans. Why thow a doubt or caution ? otherwise just proves that you guys are just gambling in the name of country. In the begining I was a staunch supporter of republicanism but the story that unfold during 2 years made me think " wait a minute here, what's going on?". That andolan-2 was nerver about granting 22 lakh citizenship to indians nor it was about federal system. But these players implemented these first in hasty like there is no tomarrow and being skeptic , i refuse to gamble over the sovereignty of nation and left the casino (not that i have +ve towards gyane and paras) but you folks keep playing roulette. the unknown darkside(black) has a also 50% of probability but red seems to be the winning hand for the moment. Celebrate with full heart why think of math?
