Grueling session

Victory wasn't easy for this 24-year-old sepoy of Kolkota Police. During all those grueling months of training, Prashant faced moments of dejection and inferiority complex. "All the participants, other than me, were trained singers. My dressing sense and mannerism did not match their 'cool' attitude. At times, I was rebuked for my 'shabby’ attitude. Judges' ruthless remarks too pulled me apart, but then I gathered myself and concentrated on improving my performance." He philosophically adds, "Let bygones be bygones. Those things don't matter to me now."

Tough days

Prashant lost his father when he was just ten. The financial problems only increased and his mother took up work at a local hotel and opened a small daily needs shop at home. "She waited eagerly for me to turn 18, so that I could take up my (late) father's job with the Kolkata Police," says he. Joining the force did give him a sense of satisfaction when it came to sharing his mother's burden, but then somewhere the singer hidden within-- felt suffocated and his desire to study further, too came to an end.

It brought tears into my eyes. How he fought back with the bad comments from the judges, fought himself to do better and better. Thank God for his victory. With his dedication and hard work, he is going to be a very good playback singer.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh took time off to watch the show and so did millions of others in India, Nepal and across the seas in various time zones as Darjeeling boy Prashant Tamang ousted Shillong's Amit Paul to become 'Indian Idol 3'.

The prime minister and his family thoroughly enjoyed Sony TV's talent hunt that ended in a grand finale Sunday night at Exhibition Grounds in the national capital's Okhla area with thousands of fans cheering on their favourites.

Before the grand finale, the two singers met Manmohan Singh and Congress president Sonia Gandhi and sought their blessings.

Kolkala police constable Prashant, who walked away with a Rs.10 million contract with Sony and a Maruti SX4 car, defeated Amit Paul on the basis of audience votes - totalling a whopping 70 million SMS messages.

Bollywood star John Abraham and lyricist Javed Akhtar gave away the prizes after the pulsating climax to a show for which many thousands had auditioned.

Among the audience were the families of both participants, sometimes praying nervously, sometimes breaking into wide smiles.

The frenzy stretched far beyond the confines of the venue in Delhi.

In Darjeeling, Prashant's home town, it was as if the Queen of the Hills had finally got her prince.

It was the moment all Darjeeling had been waiting for. People rushed out of their homes, gathered in front of the Mall Road and embraced each other in joy. It was ecstasy at midnight as fireworks lit up the sky, gulal thickened the air and liquor flowed freely.

Huge processions of motorbikes and cars blew their horns and snaked across the hill town throughout Sunday night. Thousands braved the chill and participated in the revelry.

Prashant's crowning glory also electrified the Kolkata Police, of whose band he is the lead singer. The Bodyguard Police Line, where Prashant used to jam with his band, erupted in joy.

Similar scenes were seen in Kathmandu too where Nepalis celebrated their latest idol.

Ecstatic fans started bursting crackers while crowds danced on the streets, screaming the 24-year-old Nepali origin artist's name again and again in delight.

As the results were announced and the Darjeeling boy's mother put the Nepali dhaka topi -- that is part of the Nepali national dress -- on her son's head, Nepal went wild with pride and joy.

Despite the lateness of the hour, spontaneous processions marched through the streets not just in Kathmandu but also in Pokhara town and other areas.



The rallies were reminiscent of another national celebration last year when similar late night demonstrations erupted following King Gyanendra's decision to surrender the power he had seized through a coup and restore democracy.

Various organisations and individuals in Nepal had been raising funds to send SMS votes to help the boy from Tungsung village win. Determined teams even went to Darjeeling on the eve of the grand finale Sunday to vote for him from there after Nepal Telecom said its SMS service could not be used to send votes.

Nepal found a new icon in the small-town boy who had no formal training in music and was forced to take up a job early in life after the death of his father but still overcame great odds and nearly 30,000 aspirants to win.

Meghalaya, which had been praying fervently for its own boy Amit Paul to win, tearfully still called him Indian Idol.

Thousands of people had been singing and dancing to the accompaniment of drums and guitars in the streets of Shillong and most parts of Meghalaya since dusk Sunday. But when John Abraham declared Prashant the Indian Idol, the music was abruptly stilled.

The Meghalaya fans rallied fast, however.

'We are really taken aback by the result, but for us Amit is the winner, having won the hearts of millions of fans and more importantly, uniting the ethnically polarized northeast through music,' John F. Kharshiing, spokesperson of the Federation of Khasi States, the apex body campaigning for legal status for the durbars in Meghalaya, told IANS.

'Let's accept the reality, don't cry for me. I am soon coming back to Shillong. I really thank and love you all from the bottom of my heart for supporting me throughout my musical journey on Indian Idol,' Amit told IANS.

But people back home were in tears - hundreds of people, both young and old who remained awake to celebrate a possible victory broke down, some of them even wailing, unable to accept the verdict.

Whether Prashant or Amit really make it to the big league of singers is to be seen. For the moment, the duo - even loser Amit - can savour their moment of popularity and the few hours on a Sunday night when Indians all over tuned in to their tellies. Those moments will live on.

गीत प्रतियोगितामा प्रशान्त तामाङको विजयले नेपालको जातीय र राष्ट्रिय भावनाको विषयमा उठेका प्रश्न र शंकाको तड्कारो जवाफ दिएको छ । तामाङ जाति, नेपाली मूल र भारतीय राष्ट्रियताका कलाकारको र्समर्थन र विजयोत्सवमा सिंगो नेपालका सबै जाति र समुदायको लहर उर्ल्याे । भारतीय नेपालीको ऐक्यबद्धता र उल्लास आफ्नो ठाउ“मा छ“दै छ, विश्वभरि छरिएका नेपालीमा पनि यस्तै उमंग देखापर्‍यो । यस लहरमा कतै नाक, रौं, आ“खा, छाला, जातजाति तर्राई, पहाडजस्ता विषयको गन्ध देखापरेन ।

प्रशान्त गोर्खामा जन्मेका होइनन् । अहिले गोर्खाका बासिन्दाबाहेक अरू कसैले आफूलाई गोर्खाली भन्दैनन् । इतिहासमा समयसमयमा नेपाल विशाल थियो तर पन्ध्रँैं शताब्दीपछि वाग्मती उपत्यकाको सेरोफेरोमा मात्र त्यो खुम्चिएको थियो । उपत्यका बाहिर चारै दिशाका मान्छेले यसै ठाउ“मा पुग्नुलाई 'नेपाल जाने' भन्थे । २४० वर्षपुरानो इतिहासले नेपाल र गोर्खाको भावनात्मक भूगोललाई अर्कै रूप दियो । केही मान्छे अझै पनि भन्छन्- गोर्खाले जित्यो हामीले हार्‍यौं । गोर्खाका बासिन्दा भन्छन्- गोर्खाले हार्‍यो, नेपालले जित्यो, गोर्खाको सारा श्रीवैभव काठमाडौं सर्‍यो । मेची-महाकालीभित्रका जनता भन्छन्- पुरानो विशाल नेपाल नपाए पनि ठूलै नेपाल पायौं हामीले । तर भारत विजयी दार्जिलिङे प्रशान्त संगीतको सगरमाथा चढेर सानसित भन्छन्- 'गोर्खालीको छोरो हु“ म गोर्खे मेरो नाम ।' किन यस्तो गौरव छ गोर्खे नाममा -

पृथ्वीनारायण शाहका सेना नेपालका ससाना राज्य-रजौटामा विजयी भएर गोर्खाली बहादुर कहलिएका होइनन् । उनीहरूले नेपालमाथि आक्रमण गर्ने अंग्रेजलगायत शक्तिशाली सेनामाथि सानदार विजय हासिल गरेर वीर गोर्खाली नाम पाएका हुन् । प्रशान्तमा देखिने गोर्खाली गौरव त्यसै चरणको पुर्ख्याैली संस्कार हो । गोर्खाली सेनाको बहादुरीबाट अंग्रेजहरू लोभिएका थिए । यस जातिलाई आफ्नो सेनामा भर्ती गर्न पाए विश्वविजयी बन्न सकिन्छ भन्ने उद्देश्यले नेपालमा उनीहरूले राणाशाही स्थापनाको भूमिका खेलेका हुन् । कोतपर्वले अंग्रेजी उपनिवेशवादविरोधी स्वाभिमानी देशभक्तको संहार गर्‍यो र नेपालीलाई ब्रिटिस विस्तारवादी सेनामा भर्तीको ढोका खोल्यो । तर पुरानो जोसलाई अन्धो ढंगले जगाउन गोर्खा भर्ती केन्द्र खोलेर सेनाको नाममा पनि गोर्खा शब्द जोड्यो, विजेता खुकुरीका प्रतीक टोपीमा सिउर्‍यो र सैनिक झन्डामा फहरायो । अशिक्ष्ँित नेपालीलाई परेडमा उफारेर रक्सीको रम्रमाहटमा 'आयो गोर्खे' भनेर फुर्क्याउ“दै विश्व विजयी युद्धमा झोंक्यो । अशिक्ष्ँा र पेटको बाध्यता भए पनि नेपाली शूरवीर थिए । नांगो खुकुरीका भरमा तोप र बंकरमाथि खनिने साहसले जिताएको युद्धले बेलायत विश्व सम्राट बन्यो र ब“चेका बहादुरलाई भीसीलगायत विविध तक्मा बा“ड्यो । ती गोर्खा सैनिकले कसका शत्रुलाई जिते र कसका मित्रलाई हराए - वर्तमानले विश्लेषण गरिरहेको छ । त्यसैले त प्रशान्तको गीतले मार्मिक भावमा भन्छ- जितेकै छौं संसारलाई, अरूको जस्तै दुःख छ हामीलाई, निर्दयी त होइनौं हामी पनि, वीर वीर गोर्खाली । आमाले पहिराएको वीरता र जातीयताको प्रतीक टोपी ढल्काएर उनले गाएको गीतले हामी एकातिर खुसीले गद्गद् छौं, अर्कातिर देशलाई नया“ युगमा लैजाने जटिल जिम्मेदारी बोधले गम्भीर छौं ।

कतिपय मानिस भन्दै छन्- नेपाल भौगोलिक रूपमा एकीकृत भए पनि सबै जाति जनजातिबीच भावनात्मक एकता नभएकाले एक राष्ट्र बनिसकेको छैन । के हो भावनात्मक एकताको परिभाषा - एकातिर दार्जिलिङे तामाङलाई जिताउन सिंगो नेपाल जर्ुमुराउ“छ र देशका दसगजाको सीमास्तम्भ अरूले हल्लाइ दि“दा सारा नेपालीको रगत तात्छ । भारतले अबैध रूपले बा“धेको बा“धले तर्राईका गाउ“ डुब्दा देश रुन्छ र आर्थिक सहयोग जुटाउ“छ । धर्मराज थापाले गाएको 'हाम्रो तेन्जिङ शर्ेपाले चढ्यो हिमाल चुचुरा' भन्ने गीत सुन्दा नेपालीको छाती ढक्क फुल्छ । पासाङ ल्हामु शर्ेपाको सगरमाथा विजय र दुःखद मृत्युमा नेपाली एकै साथ हा“सेर रुन्छ । महावीर पुन पुरस्कृत हु“दा सबै नेपाली गौरवान्वित हुन्छन् । हिंसाविरुद्ध सबै नेपाली सामूहिक जुलुसमा निस्कन्छन् । यी सबै विषयभन्दा माथि हजारौं वर्षो सामन्ती व्यवस्था र निरंकुश राजतन्त्रको समाप्ति र लोकतान्त्रिक गणतन्त्रको स्वागतनिम्ति सिंगो देशमा एकै दिन पचासौं लाखका जुलुस निस्कन्छन् भने भावनँत्मक एकताको अर्काे बान्की खोज्न कहा“ जाने - र नवउपनिवेशी शोषणविरुद्ध कहिलेदेखि एकताबद्ध भएर लड्ने -
