I dont know about others but I was much surprised not to see the members of "MAHA" in that list,Haribansa Acharya or Madankrishna Shrestha or both of them by far deserve to be in that list...niranya is there but they aren't?? I think its the insult of nirnaya more than theirs and Kanishka Chaugain?? Binod Das is a much better cricketer and good looking than chaugain, how could you forget the skipper of the national team?? And Hari khadka, although he's a bit overrated but still he's looked upon as a role model by a lot of youths who kick the ball. And of course, how could they forget me??:p...these are the reasons why I haven't considered this article to be serious...
And calling Dr. Bhola Rijal gay just because he's a gyanecologist is pathetic,Grow up!

i did not say anything which was not known or written about dr. devkota. i am sure you are aware of the complicated surgery to separate the joint heads of the twin, which he led with the help of singaporian surgeons - a surgery of one of it's kind. i am not saying he is the best but he is certainly one of the best in his business. even if that does not earn him an official position for one of the best surgeons in the world, he sure does deserve a top spot for one of the top men in nepal.

LooTe bro,

If you start believing everything that nepali press writes, then you'll have to believe that giraja's is a 'superhuman' or 'god-like' and so on. But truth of the matter is you and i all know what he's.

Yes i'm aware about the pioneering surgery that took place in singapore. But it wasn't dr devkota but dr pant who was part of the team. Dr Pant's also a renowned neurosurgeon in nepal.

Dr Devkota may have great gifted hands and cuts flesh extremely precisely, but that doesn't make him a great surgeon. A great surgeon is the one who not only has great hands but respects his patients as individuals and takes a holistic approach in their treatment. From what i hear from people who've worked for him in the past and some of my own relatives who have visited him as his patients, he's an arrogant and stroppy sod who lacks respect for others. Just because he came from a village and excelled in his studies i certainly would not idolise him as a great surgeon. It takes a lot more to become a really great surgeon.

जहाँसम्म टप ५० को कुरा छ, कमल थापा त त्यो लिष्टमा छ भने डा. देबकोटा मात्रै किन जो राख्दिए नि हुन्छ।

Now what is that VOW magazine, is it popular in nepal??

Obviously, if the top's list of nepal does not include MAHA from comedy but has Santosh panta, No Upendra Devkota in medical field but ashok banskota, there is some problem. when upendra devkota, anuradha koirals etc joined the Gyanendre's cabinet, my unscientific guess is that majority of politically aware nepalese, at that time, were actually positive.
Is upendra devkota a likable person, MAY BE NOT but is he a devoted doctor, nationalist and patriot ABSOLUTELY
Dont forget, TIME magazine regularly have people like OSAMA BIN LADEN, POL POT, FIEDEL CASTRO, MUKTADA AL SADR, ABU MUSAB AL ZARKAWI , KHUMENI in top peoples list so no wonder Kamal thapa, Pashupati shamsher rana are in the list

Dr. Devkota is a pioneer in his field. If you think he does not respect his patients, then why are the people still waiting for months to go see him? If you want respect more than the cure to your disease go see some peon, they will respect you.

Regarding him charging high fees, it is based on supply and demand, nobody is putting a gun on your head and asking you to go see him. There are plenty of other doctors. It is your choice. If you want to get his time and skills you got to give something in return. Money is the medium of exchange.

I'm not sure whether he should be on the top 50 list or not but looking at the above list I will say YES. Like someone has mentioned before this list doesnot mean much because it has Gayne, Kamal Thapa, Girija and as such.

Somebody mentioned his joining the government in 2001. We don't know what his true intentions were so we should not be too quick to judge. One thing is for sure that he did not do it for the money because he can probably make more in his practice. Maybe he thought that he could be part of the team that can bring peace.

There were few comments about his personal life too. Nobody has right to comment on other people's personal lives. That is absolutely pathetic and truly uncalled for. I'm not sure whether he is still married or divorced but that is none of my business. People who are into character assasination should look at themselves and their family too. Do you beleive that your family is the only one without any flaws? Don't act as if your shit does not stink.

i_nepali,

There's no criteria for this selection and they announce to vote for a top man in Nepal a mone back in same magazine. It's not scientific and accurate in terms of random selection.

'Dr Devkota is a pioneer in his field.'

..really? how?

i've nothing against him personally. i totally agree that he's possibly one of the best neurosurgeons in the country.

i did a quick search on his publications in Pubmed (most popular internet database of medical literature), and found only 5 journal articles in his name (that too since 1984).

1: Devkota UP, Aryal KR
Result of surgery for ruptured intracranial aneurysms in Nepal.

5: Kohi YM, Johnston RA, Devkota UP. Related Articles, Links

Pioneer means "break new ground". I remember when I was about 10-12, there were SEVERAL times he was in the news because he had performed some brain surgery for the first time in Nepal. Does this qualify as breaking new ground or not?

I do not know about his publications and that is not indicative of his ability to perform.

...there are many more surgeries to be done for the first time in Nepal, which are carried out routinely in many parts of the world. the term 'pioneer' in neurosurgery in general probably requires a bit more than just performing for the first time in a particular part of the world.

you also said:

'If you want respect more than the cure to your disease go see some peon, they will respect you.'

would you not like to be cured as well as respected as an individual?

I agree 100% with chakku. Upendra Devkota was a hype in the early days, there is nothing so "Exceptional", "Pioneering" in his expertise,he just follows what other surgeons have been following in west Bengal and Assam of India.

Follow his so called pioneering works with Dr. chang of Siliguri, you will get a glimpse of what this guy is up to.

"Dr.Devkota is a pioneer in his field. If you think he does not respect his patients, then why are the people still waiting for months to go see him? If you want respect more than the cure to your disease go see some peon, they will respect you"
Eminitrader, pls go to Birhospital and check out. I am not talking about any other category or person (peon). What i think is if someone respects you and greet you then you don't loose anything by greeting them back!!!!!

"Regarding him charging high fees, it is based on supply and demand, nobody is putting a gun on your head and asking you to go see him. There are plenty of other doctors. It is your choice. If you want to get his time and skills you got to give something in return. Money is the medium of exchange"
In emergency cases you don't shop around.
He charges very big amount . We all know its very hard to pay big amount by most of the patient. Do you think patients ask his service for free for neurosurgery?

"Somebody mentioned his joining the government in 2001. We don't know what his true intentions were so we should not be too quick to judge. One thing is for sure that he did not do it for the money because he can probably make more in his practice. Maybe he thought that he could be part of the team that can bring peace"
i think army had there own doctors.
What about Black BMW he got from Gyanendra after the incident? (not my concern though)

And i am agree that we shouldnot go with his personal life.
But if he improves his patient doctor relationship then would be far better for him and patients. (Just my opinion).

the term 'pioneer' ......... requires a bit more than just performing for the first time in a particular part of the world.

Do you consider Madan Krishna/Hari Bansha to be pioneers or not? I think they are. With your defination, since comedy has been done for centuries, they should not be considered pioneers.

would you not like to be cured as well as respected as an individual?

Yes, in that case I would probably go see some other doctor that will show some respect. How do you define respect? If someone says hello to me and I do not have time to talk, am I being disrespectful? Everybody wants some of his time and if they don't get it, is that considered being disrespectful. I don't think he is telling his patients to go to hell. Maybe the patient's family because sometimes they deserve it. It has happened with many doctors that the patient's family tells the doctors how to do their job. You don't get respect, you have to gain it.

bme,

you think Upendra Devkota was a hype? What makes you so qualified to say that? Can you tell us a little about yourself, like what you do for a living, how many people come to you for advise, your contribution to this world and as such?

look emitrader, you're free to believe what you want to believe. all i's trying to do was to encourage people to look at the facts rather than follow some nepali medias' miguided claims.

you've misquoted what i've said. you've to read the whole paragraph to understand the essence of my post. your 'selective' excerpt is misleading.

and also 'neurosurgery' and 'comedy' are very different. i don't know what you're trying to say.

'Maybe the patient's family because sometimes they deserve it (disrespect)'

no one deserves disrespect. doctors must always respect their patients (no ifs no buts)

Chakku: Give us some facts then. Where can we find the facts? A link would do.

So in your mind who are the pioneers in engineering, medicine, litreture? I'm not sure if there is anything that has been done in Nepal that is already not done in some other country.

chakku,
i take my words back about dr. devkota, if you feel it's undeserving. he does not deserve to be a role-model to you and to others, agreed. there are far better neurosurgeons in nepal, asia and in the world who deserve the place of top influencing personalities of nepal.

no one is perfect and no one is super human in this non-utopian society where we're living. when i say role-model, i mean it for certain qualities that people have. dr. devkota, in my view, certainly has some and that earns him a position in the list of top people of nepal-- where in exactly and after how many people -- i don't know!

number of publications, how he treats patients, his attitudes all do count to certain extent, but it cannot take, what he has achieved, away from him.

Astu
