I now feel that Maoists are not so much interested in 'governing' with a focus on long term national goals. Prachanda desparately wanted to clear his image in the international arena, and he's done that by touring foreign countries for more than half of his days in office. Not only him, most of his cabinet members have been on foreign junkets.. Their another motive was to make an impression that they are working for the low income / marginalized groups, with some populist programmes.. and BRB's budget has tried to touch it. They probably  now know they also cannot do anything, and things will remain the same... It's almost clear what they'll do next, remember BRBs speech last week --"we'll go to the people for another round of struggle if we're not allowed to work". You cannot deliver, and start blaming others.. it's just ridiculous... 

They'll next start saying that nothing can be done without having a people's republic, and that'll be the propoganda for the next elections. Unfortunately, we have so much poverty, they'll have a following. Anyway, they say people's republic with multi-party system, and though it does not look so easily possible in Nepal, their model is probably the chinese model- chinese system is also technically a multi-party system, only that the other parties (which do not have their own armies) except the CCP are practically of subordinate nature..

The only thing that's looks a bit different now is BAMDEV's initiative.. don't know whether it has made things different but it's covered in the press a lot. Maoist ministers still seem to be busy scheduling their next foreign trips, haven't heard of  any new programs, from them.

Someone rightly said above that the country would have made a lot of progress in the last decade if we had no war at all. It's not the corrupt leaders who'd do it, but the private and community sectors that were developing so rapidly. We can just see the neighbouring country. In spite of rampant corruptions, Indian economy has risen with the initiatives of the private sector.. We've lost a lot of time, only to see a series of newer politicians putting unnecessary burden on our economy..

Really ? Well DIDN'T WE HAVE THE SAME THING UNDER MONARCHY FROM 1990 TILL GYANEY TOOK POWER ? THERE WERE MULTI PARTIES AND PERIODIC ELECTIONS TOO THEN. So what is the difference ? Yes, Shiva Ji, that’s the case. Maoist leadership has done severe misguiding to their cadres feeding a lot of BS and it is to be seen how they are going to handle the shocked and disillusioned cadres once they start to encounter the reality.

 

As for “people’s republic”, I have said it many times that even Prachanda and Baburam themselves do not know what the hell it is. Did you listen to Mahara’s interview on BBC yesterday ? Mahara’s answer regarding PR was that it will have all the things (fundamental rights, political freedom, multiparty competition and so on) of liberal democracy and more but they have not figured out yet what that more is. His own word was “हामी नयाँ मोडालिटी (मोडेल ?) खोज्दैछौं” ।

Maoist leadership has now decided to launch a nationwide debate/discussion among their cadres on the issue of PR.

idologies, doctorine are not a big issue this time and no matter how good are idologies they turn out to be worthless until and unless we have a good leader, social security, basic human right and fundamental infrastructure.

Maoists have all these features but just in bhasan and nothing more (they were claiming that they would outperform all those previous democratic leaders). And this particular bhasan has brainwashed  all the dumba** nepalese who voted for maoists. Maoists are now feeling that the leadership in their hand is like "FALAM KO CHIURA" and are starting to realize that bhasan and big budgets are not everything.

It is a very good chance still for maoists to prove that they are atleast better than others if not the best if they could focuss on theses issues

1. return the captured land to whom it belongs

2. Dissolve YCL and stop chanda atanka, and stop giving money to PLA

3. Immediately stop expenses in foreign tours

4. punish the previous corrupts and no more corruption

this doesnot take more than few weeks to come in effect

and then they can start planning on infrastructure development

Good to see positivism and a list of concrete suggestions.

 

I agree with your take that regardless of what and how it happened, Maoist has a CHANCE right now to do and show that they can govern better than all previous rulers/governments did.

 

But for that, they will have to take many decisions very painful and difficult to themselves.

 

If they miss that and took an easy ride, the vacuum (of a good government) will still be there and somebody else will fill that.

 

It’s a simple math. We must note that Maoist themselves could come to this point by filling the vacuum (of neglect to contemporary social, political and economic issues) created by corrupt parliamentary parties.

1. I was there in Nepal when you are speculating outcome of CA election.

2. Forget about the rural village,  IN KTM VALLEY, YCL came to my house early in the morning just before a election day and sweetly threatened and taken away ( KEHI SAHAYOG)  Rs1000 for thier refreshments. I was helpless when I saw my dad's hard earned money being taken away buy bunch of gundas.

3.On election day, one of the YCL leader from the community came with mini TATA and they put all housewives and childrens of 10-12 years around the area  in that  mini TATA saying "hamilai tapainko sahyog chaincha! Jaun anos" " bholi kehi ramro bhayena bhane hamilai nabhannu hola"-what a threat-do you have any ideahow this would have impaired child psyche!

Not just their cadres but there are top maobadi leaders like like Mohan Vaidya who is totally bent on totalitarian communism.

Even their executive body seems to believe that total communism is the only way out for Nepal and the world!! However laughable this statement may seem but that is the reality.

How long will it take for them to realize that "communism" is a failed concept? How long will it take for them to realize ‘रुम्जाटार’?   How many will have to suffer before they "realize" that the path to progress is through inclusion? Is yet to be seen?
