For those of you who are bothered by the flying banner ads that go across the screen constantly, there are solutions .

here is a very simple one that I use and works for me.

1)
Download/install Mozilla firefox browser if you havent already. If you use one,
update it to the latest version. link: www.mozilla.com/firefox

2)

open the browser and type https://addons.mozilla.org . You can also do this directly after opening the firefox brower by clicking tools-->addons--> get extensions.
This will bring you to a page where there are many useful little programs that you can install according to you needs.

3)
we will be installing two small addon programs from the "firefox-addon" page. There is a search box somewhere on the top of the page. You can search the name of the addons from that box. Here are the 2 addons you will need:

a)
Adblock plus - this lets you block most of the ads in any site. Very useful
program. The more you play with it, the more you will like it.
Once installed, you will see red colored icon on the top right of the firefox browser. Click on that and it will give you the list of stuff running, for example, in sajha.Double click on where it says banners or ads etc. A new window will pop out and simply click on" Add filter" button. That part will vanish from the browser. You will have to do this for each ad link. I'm sure theres a easier way but I havent had time to explore more.

b)
Noscript- I love this addon. Like the name says, it will block most kinds of scripts such
as java scripts , and also programs such as flash, java etc etc. .
You can actually control which site/program to block and which not to block, so its very user friendlly. What I do is, I block all the sites in default by clicking "untrusted" and later allow according to my needs.
After it is installed,it's icon "S" is placed at the bottom right corner of the firefox browser.Click on the icon and you will see lots of other sites tying to gain access to your browser besides sajha. You can block all or you can block some. Even if you block, you can still access most sites, but for more fancy looking sites( since they use flash, java etc), you may have to enable the no script by just clicking and allowing.

Thats it. Combination of these two addons should take care of your needs, atleast for now.

However, do click on Sajha.com ads once in a while from internet explorer :).Thers a real cost involved to operate website of this caliber, no doubt. I like this site but what can I say, I hate those moving banners.

Its my thread I guess I am supposed to respond. :)

Thankyou kukpaboy, poon-hill,Phantom-25 and seikofor taking time to respond.

Sajha's ads on the webpages seem to increase "intrusively" as years pass by, so I just wanted to remind people that there are other options than pleading to our good ol' San.

Dear Eyefusion,

I appreciate your enthusiasm regarding sajha, and kudos on your 'spirit of sharing' which is what sajha is mostly about.

Over the past few months, I have seen few threads regarding the scrolling banner being irritating, and you have even termed it 'intrusive'. If you are a typical internet user then I am sure you have seen more 'intrusive' and 'irritating' ads while surfing on other websites and/or discussion forums.

Many other free sites like sajha have such intrusive ads which have popup ads; pop - under ads (which pop up in another window underneath the main browser); interstellar ad - which force you to 'skip the ad', some pop up ads even force you to download active-x components which can be malicious spyware. Most other sites run third party ads which have the potential of running tracking cookies on your computer.

Compare all that potential hazard and hassle of having to close ad browsers everytime you open a new page, to straightforward simple ad banners in sajha which are neither intrusive nor malicious.

As few of you have noted, the top scrolling banner 'can' get irritating to few users. This scrolling banner was the simple answer to be able to run multiple banners without having to compromise other area of the site with banners. These banners are mostly run by Businesses dealing with Nepal or Nepalis. These are there to provide options when you need to buy a plane ticket, or phone cards etc. These banner help keep sajha free of other annoying and intrusive ads as I had mentioned above.

Enjoy sajha, enjoy the banners. It's a win win situation!

Dear San,
I appreciate your response. I wasnt looking for one, but I'll accept it.

You need to make money to support the site and as a nepali, I encourage myself and others to click on the ads on sajha when appropriate.

I like sajha, no doubt. However you control it, and I honestly dont know you.

But I can smell you, and what you are employing here is an old "scare tactic" of unwanted cookies and viruses(malwares).

Ofcourse you would like me to see or click every ad that you feature on the site , and hence I never expect you admit the moving banner ad being "intrusive". Yes I am amongst "few" people who find it irritating, but, no thankyou, I do not have to "enjoy" the banner.

You seem to use the word 'free " a lot when explaining about sajha. But I'm sure you know about the open source scene and I suggest you re-lookup the definition of "free".

It has already been a win-win situation for us San. We dont need a flying banner to come in between :)

For all the viewers who are concerned about malicious active x,
The two addons from fire fox adblock and noscript will not let you add malicious scripts.
Even internet explorer7 has defense against active x. It will ask you before you install it.

For popup, all browsers block popup nowadays and you have that feature in
tool-->options-->content-->block pop-up windows.

to control cookies, you can also you forefox's default mechanism. Click tools-->options -->privacy and under private data tick always clear my private data when I close firefox.
Also, in the same page under cookies, you can manipulate you setup.

Eyefusion,

I know its none of my business, but I thought your reply to San was a bit rude. Afterall, he is providing sajha for us... and why dont you just let him do it his way. I dont know why you have to come in between and tell him (nicely) to go mind his business. Sajha IS his business. If there are somethings he needs to do to maintain this website then be it... why do you have to be all "I wont let the banner come in between". I dont think you really appreiciate San (and sajha for that matter) for what they are providing for numerous Nepali people through out the world! Why dont you losen up and let San do what he needs to do. Just my thought, please dont be all whiny about it!

I think everyone should use what Eyefusion suggested instead of whining to San if you find the banner annoying. He has to make money, so there is no point in asking him to remove it. Appreciate the info.

Eyefusion,
Thank you for accepting my response.

Just want to clarify few things:

- The banners in sajha are not based on cpc (cost per click) it's based on a monthly flat fee, so it does not make a difference if you click on the ad or not. So there is no reason for me to encourage anyone to click the ads unless they want to.

- You seem to be technically inclined but you have to be aware that most people who visit the site are not as technically inclined as yourself. You give example of Internet Explorer 7 which has defense against active x. Less than 0.001 percent of the visitors use IE7. In fact the usage is so little that it does not even register on the browser stats page as seen below. I respect the fact that your observations are from the perspective of a technically inclined person, while my response is for even the non technically inclined.

- Even with automatic popup blockers installed with google toolbars, I still keep getting pop ups and pop unders. Some of these pop up ads resemble system messages which a naive user could click and unintentionally install unwanted programs which may include malicious spyware.

- I mentioned 'free' in context of comparing with other free sites with plenty of popup ads, and in context of making sajha 'free' of other annoying and intrusive ads. You may have to resolve any preconceived notions about the definition of 'free' on your own. Internet is a free resource as any layman knows and noone has to let them know they can visit any site for 'free'.

- If anyone appreciates sajha for being what it is, it's not because it is perceived as being a favor. Sajha was not started with any profit in mind. It was started as a basic discussion site for all Nepalese, as a personal hobby of mine. I hope you understand the concept of hobby. This hobby has grown big as more and more people have participated and found sajha to be a useful site. With more traffic, it has gained interest of some businesses which would like to promote their products and services through sajha. Sajha began as a win win situation. With the advent of advertisers, it continues to become a win win situation for all.

- One major lesson I have learned during all this time is you can't please all the people all the time. There will be a very small percentage of people who will not be happy and I appreciate the fact that they will be the ones making the most noise. In the 'free' (as in freedom and such and not the preconceived notion of cost and such) and supposedly 'democratic' world of sajha, everyone's entitled to express their own opinions including myself.

Best Regards

thanx eyefusion, appreciate that thing u posted.. i havnt tried it yet but i sure will....
this freakin scrolling add with nice pinkish color sure is annoying enough to make my eyes hurt.......
m not that technical but i know when sthn is irritating me......
i got no complaints again san except the fact that he could have done sthn about this banner thing but anyways its his website n we r jus visitors so cant complain about anything...i like sajha n so do many others n that banner is irritatin but not enough to make us stop from visitin sajha....n san knows that n thats why the moving or flying thing is still there even after all the requests we made.
does it matter how annoying it is? i guess not...
making money from wherever possible.....i probably would have done the same thing. not putting up an annoying bannner but trying to make money ;)
who does not like money!!
anyways, i guesss what matters is that its san's website and we have to appreciate what he does with it.....
having said all this, i would like to add one little message for san : sajha is a channel through which a lot of nepali people get connected around the world n there are no words to thank u enough for providing sajha to all sajha people, but dont let little things like these become a big issue and put a big Q on sajha........
peace
