I want to clear few things, these comments are based upon deliverable of promises made before election. I had to mention this before saying anything because many of you will again say to me, Oh! so you really think the maoist are  going to do what they've promised and something similar to this nature. I am being optimistic here and thinking positively.

Maoist plans are to abolish all private schools and establish a new education system and make education free for all until 12 grade. Making a system that tries to educate all children equally to a high level is a fundamental building block to any country. Some country like Germany have gone further and made colleges free too.
As we all know that starting a new school in nepal has become a business these days. You observe a school in every block in kathmandu. There is nothing wrong with establishment of so many schools, but the only problem is that only 2 to 3% of nation's children/family can really attend it. I mean some of these 10 +2 charge like 5000 per month (this is during my time, not sure how much it has grown, may be exponentially). Thats like a month of salary a normal person working in government job gets, now how can he afford it. So if he decides to take his son/daughter to public government school then u know what happens. Public schools run by government still have the same curriculum since 1980s etc. Do you remember the book for english for SLC.

Please add your opinions...this might just be a start..

Dude are you going to pay the do to do that??
Do u think thats possible?
Well even if they do that it would force all kids into khatas, like Maoists. If you want to send your kids into Maoist run school to pray Mao se tung and Prachandaaa terrorist then good for you. I hate communism cause I have taken my breath under the free sun and would love to see everyone uder it.
Jai Nepal.

We are not looking into eradicating the schools literally. Not trying to say that all private schools will be closed down and the students will be told to look for another public school. My thoughts are that many schools with substantially larger volume will continue, but the state will control the upper management by insuring same curriculm is provided in all schools and no fees being charged. Now I disgree with you on what u said that they will be teaching childrens about Mao se and Prachanda, this is unbelievable, I can strongly feel that this will NOT happen. Only time can tell us whats gonna really happen. The education level can be definitely promoted to current standards. Now as far as for the money part is concerned, now we need to find a resource to pay the teachers and administrative staffs. Lately I have looked into what kind of impact the civil war has had in the tourism business. We all know that tourism is one of the biggest resource to our country's economy. Before the maoist insertion, the number of tourist to nepal were in lakhs, now its in thousands. I mean there is a lot of income out there just waiting for nepal to starting collecting on. Once the country stabalizes its political situation along with peace in the country. The tourism business will start booming and may add to start this new education system.

So many industrialized and non-communist countries have free schools. (it is not actuall free because taxes are put into place) and its not necessarily true that the education will me maoist-biased since not all the teachers will be maoist. thats what i think..lemme know if im wrong.

Nationalising private school is not a good idea. As mentioned above Germany have free college, but I think you don't know that they have lots of private school too, where fees are charged at almost 10000-15000/year euro even for a nursery kids. UK has free school but if you go private you will end of paying up to £1000/month. So they better make government school free but private should remain private as these are the only school where our kids get decent education, manners, personality, sportsmanship etc. Private schools are expensive because, teachers are paid 10 times more, library, lab, sports facilities are of high-ends. If government gives all these facility at no cost or nominal cost, in government school, (especially quality of education) then I am sure all the parents will take their kids to the government school and private school will shut down itself. So better change the state run school first.

Ofcourse, I agree TutunKaMun, development of public schools should be first. Upgrading their standards can be feasible within our available resources. Once parents can see that public schools have gotten better, they will naturally stop paying high prices for similar education one can get through the public system. But I sure there will be a lot of top school mangers or principles that will be upset by this coz their number of students might shrink. But as always ones loss will anothers gain. Even more than extra-curricular activites, the state will need to focus more on quality of teaching and its eduaction standards for better welfare of the children.

HAHAHAHAHA....WHEN THE MOST ECONOMICALLY RICH AND DEVELOPED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD, UNITED STATE OF AMERICA WHERE ALMOST 80% OF THE RESIDENTS PAY TAXES CAN'T  AFFORD TO PROVIDE FREE EDUCATION AND HEALTH TO ITS PEOPLE, YOU ARE DREAMING OF FREE EDUCATION AND HEALTH IN NEPAL WHERE LESS THAN 30% OF PEOPLE PAY THEIR TAXES.

DON'T ASSUME THAT FOREIGN AID WILL FLOURISH IN NEPAL FOR ATLEAST SOME TIME BEFORE MAOIST CORRECT THEIR ATTITUDE.

If they let run the public school for the required number of days without causing strikes and and other disruption half of the problem will be solved. It is not the public schools are bad, it is the attitue and perception about public school is bad. We have about 8 days of public holidays in a year in USA's university where has Nepal has 10 days of off only for election. hehehe.

Given their well-documented past transgressions against Nepali schoolchildren, educators, and adminstrators, the terrorist Maoists have already amply demonstrated exactly what they have in mind regarding educational "reform" in Nepal.

Whom are you going to believe, them or your lying eyes?

Mr. Bored; One thing i could not understand is why to abolish all private school to create a state run educational system that provides quality education for free.  Let maoist provide quality education at cheap cost, if not for free, than all costly private schools will close automatically. Because I don't believe Nepalese are fool enough to send their kids to costly private school when they can get the same quality from state run schools.

Maoist could provide the quality education, but let people decide the quality. People should have freedom of choice. Remember it was people’s decision to choose Maoist as their representative in the CA election.

Here is my philosophy, “Objectives achieved by participating in a free competition are more productive to a society then achieved by force."

Free education sounds very impressive but  how do we  know  that system will help Nepal in long run. Following things should be considered before talking about free education:

1) If the teachers are paid low, it is likely that they will pursue other jobs. If education is free, we have to have to get good teachers to make education valuable.
2) Free education is a long-run plan. It cannot be implemented immediately because there has to be a research done about its cons and pros.
3) Most countries that offer free education follow excellent tax system. Money has to cycle in the economy to make this happen. Considering the poor tax system of our country, anything free seems unlikely- good to read on a paper but hard to put it down in reality.
4) There has to be a choice given-- people who can afford for better schools should be allowed do so and people who cannot can always use the free education system if that is available. Any forced law cannot plant development- thats why communism  usually fails.
5) Abolishment of private school is a terrible plan. Even in China there are thousands of private schools so closing down such schools will surely affect our education system. It is a known fact all over the world that private education is most of the time better than public education.

What about seeding communist ideology to the students from primary level?

Why not make it mandatory for every school-going children and teachers to participate in the state-held rally?

Do you have any estimate of the children who deserted the school and were forced (or volunatarily) joined Maoists?

Does your conscience regret the collateral damage of these students who plunged to the bandwagon and once and for all left the school ?

The funeral pyre has not completely burnt down and you want to bake a cake over it. On what moral ground you stand now. Shame on you!

I am as neutral as I can be. I hate ideologies. Ironically, pragmatism is the best ideology.

I accept the results of the election. People are supreme. I WANT CHANGE from the status quo. It was hell living with those fncking so-called democratic parties. However, any Maoist move to enforce their will (whim) will be counterproductive. It will be like FROM THE FRYING PAN TO THE FIRE.

The free education concept should first be implemented in villages where there are no good schools. City like Kathmandu does not need free school since it's inhabitants have availability to both cheap and expensive schools. If new Nepal is to be created, maoist should foucus towards developing villages and not the cities. It's in the villages where people are poor and lack availability to basic human resources like education, water, electricity and jobs. If these basic amenities are available in villages, young people from villages will stop coming to cities. Development of village is the key to economic success. Who know may be one day we can be self sufficient and would not need to succumb to the foreign influence.

Jai! Nepal

thanks for all your thoughts.

Great insight to what kind of challenges we are looking to face in order to change our current education system. Looks to me like lots of people believe that the current private schools should be left alone and focus work on developing public schools and eventually bring it up to standards that will start attracting parents to take their children off from highly priced private schools and into good public. I think this is a feasible approach to start with.
