If I apply for H1B for this April, how long does it take to find out if my application is approved or not? Also any suggestions on what to do between the gap of OPT and October 1?

How come you apply for H1B? Employer is supposed sponcer your H1B once they agree to hire you. Employment agreement comes first then H1B comes.
I may have misunderstood your question.

Well it takes few months to find out if your H1 is approved or not. Now the gap between Opt expiration and H1, you will not have any status therefore you could join a kaplan university or something OR you could go to nepal. I went to Nepal for a month. However INS will give you 60 days (NOT 2 months) to prepare for packing. Now you will be lucky if Oct 1ST lies within the 60 days then you are all set.
IF NOT ENJOY YOUR VACATION BACK HOME.
