What can we learn from our 2026 election?

Well, the final results are out for the 2026 general election and let's talk about it today. RSP has shocked us all with their massive victory and made most of the political fortune-tellers eat their crystal balls. Our old media, the fake byaparis and shady contractors and the old party loyalists were worried a lot about RSP bagging 2/3 majority on their own but it seems that a seat or two less but still a shocking and record-setting victory in the history of Nepali politics.

Let us look at the final results: RSP has won 125 out of 165 FPTP seats, which is massive, more than 75% of the total seats where one had to stand up for election and get the votes. In the PR category, they managed to get 57, taking their final tally to 182, just two seats shy of a 2/3 majority in the House. But we can add our Bernie Sanders aka Mahabir Dai as one leaning towards RSP on crucial votes in the parliament and if Harka can speak less and be a reasonable person then they can also help RSP to bring vast changes in the constitution if needed.

Well, the media is blabbering a lot about how it will be tough for the RSP government to pass new laws or even amend the constitution from the Upper House since the RSP has no representation there.

Our Upper House (the National Assembly) members are elected from the electoral college made up of folks from the provincial assemblies and local-level bodies and that makes the old major political parties have a good time there.

But the National Assembly's job is to review the bills passed by the MPs and then ask for revision if needed from the folks in the lower house. I think it will not be tough to pass new laws but when it comes to amendments to the constitution, the old major political parties who control the Upper House will make it very difficult or virtually impossible since you need 40 votes out of the 59 from the National Assembly to overhaul the constitution or make any changes to the federal structure as well.

Well, let us forget about constitutional amendments for now. I think it can wait and the main focus should be transparency first. It will be pretty difficult to get rid of student unions in our government colleges and universities right away. It will be nearly impossible to get rid of the unions in our bureaucracy right away. But it is not difficult to demand a full audit and ask everyone to be transparent, be it our government agencies, local bodies or elected officials or sports organizations or NGOs or INGOs or even gharbetis in the Valley.

It will take time to reform our bureaucracy, the lazy, slow, incompetent, corrupt, bloated machine that has been having all the fun since 1991. It will take time to ensure that our big businesses will abide by our tax and labor laws and not evade taxes and pay exploitative wages but we have to start now. If the business folks are not extorted by political parties and civil servants then they will not be hesitant to be transparent and pay the taxes instead of cooking their books and bribing tax and customs officials to make illegal profits.

Well, let's get back to the results. RSP has shocked and shattered the so-called socialists and communists' dominance in our political universe. Congress 2.0 has managed to be the runner-up in this election with total 38 seats, the UML has 25 seats and the NCP has 17. RPP has also fared badly this time, with only 1 FPTP winner and 4 PR seats while Harka's party has managed 3 FPTP seats and 4 PR seats. Who is missing? The usual mix-max Madhesi political parties from the earlier versions have completely disappeared this time around and so have a few regional parties.

The PR seats have given some breathing space to the old political parties. Although they will no longer be in power or sharing power to loot us all and shoot us as well, they can either be a good strong opposition or just do the usual tamasha in the parliament or on the streets but since there is no mili-juli rule for the next five years, it will be tough for them to do loot anything.

Gyanendra Shahi has saved RPP from being zero by winning his seat from Jumla. If it weren't the case, RPP would be a zero-party and RSP would have bagged the 2/3 majority. You need at least one seat from the FPTP and 3% PR votes to become a national party in this country. For now, Harka is all smiling and congratulating his party for being a national party for now. Let's see how he and his MPs will perform in the parliament. Will they support RSP to make Nepal great again or just be busy cursing and creating scenes in the House?

The Communists are a funny lot. They make up faster than you can make a cup of tea and break up before your omelet is fully cooked. In the past thirty years, we have seen so many mergers and break-ups that communists don't even know what they are fighting for anymore. The NCP is mostly former Maoists and disgruntled former UML wallahs. They have fared badly as well but the PR seats have given them double their size and they will be using their time to give speeches in the parliament and not much.

The UML is the biggest loser in this election. Mahabir Pun is right when he says, the country has to thank Oli for the 'Blue Wave' and finally, a parliament filled with more educated and young folks than in the previous editions. He is right when he says, if it weren't for Oli's ego and the blabberings by Bhogatey aka Mahesh Basnet, the 2-ton Flower guy aka Surya Thapa and the ignorant Ram Kumari Jhakri, UML would have fared a little better but still crushed in this election anyway.

Nepali Congress 2.0 was supposed to be the upgraded version of the grand old party of Nepal. But the new version still had Bijay Gacchadar, the old school corrupt Congressi get his ticket. And the funny thing is that a son of an old mafia and Congressi politician Aftab Alab has won this time. Aftab was in jail for burning his own cadre in a brick kiln many years ago. He is dead now but his Mafia Raj is still strong in his region which was enough to elect his son this time.

And in Manang, we have the same old Congressi MP who is still facing corruption charges while from Mustang, a son of a Congressi leader has won. Nepo-kids are still around, and with due respect to late Subash Nembang from the UML, but his son's victory again is the same thing, even though he is a handsome lad and soft spoken as his dad.

Gagan Thapa still has links with mundrey Dons like Dawa Lama from Kavre and Radhey Bhai. His father-in-law was tight with Kumar Ghaite, our local gangster who was killed by the Police many years ago. So, if Nepali Congress 3.0 version becomes ready then it will have to do away with mundrey gundas and criminals getting tickets to stand up for elections. The Communists also have their mundrey gunas as well. Poor Milan Chakre could not win this time around but giving him a ticket speaks volumes about the links between criminals and our so-called socialists and communists.

We also have a few disgruntled former old party loyalists getting their tickets from RSP and winning as well. The former AIG who won by 5 votes was once a Oli loyalist who wanted to leapfrog to the post of IGP by hook or by crook but failed. A former Congressi Dr. Amresh Singh has defeated Gagan Thapa. He has close ties to the Indian Embassy.

There are other so-called opportunists as well. Hope RSP will be careful with them. There is nothing wrong with jumping ship in politics but hope these kind of people will not be the reason for any break-up within the RSP which the old political parties and the old media and tax evading, land grabbing byaparis are already planning or want it to happen so badly even when the RSP has not officially moved in to lead the country for the next five years.

Let us all congratulate ourselves that we will have a 35-year-old young man leading this country for a change after 35+ years of loot, boot and shoot. Now, maybe the old defeated ones will stay home and have some bamboo shoots. However, Prachanda will still be shining his boots to show up at the House and get his perks but will cry at night, wondering how on Earth did a young man without killing anyone, or robbing any banks or promising the moon managed to win the hearts of the Nepali voters?
