There is a big discussion going on at the moment about the 5% education services tax. Private and Boarding Schools Organization Nepal (PABSON) is unwilling to pay the tax and Dr. Bhattarai is strongly arguing that he will implement it. Who will win the fight? My vote is for Dr. Bhattarai.

My vote is also for Dr. Bhattarai...those private schools have money to build big buildings...buy buses...own private big houses...cars  and they do not have money for tax...stupid...lol

We could debate this matter as "egg or chicken first?".  The main thing is, how many private schools are not for profit? If they are for profit and people involved in the management are making money then, they should be paying tax. This field has been considered as ``bepar' so should be treated as `` byapari'.  Now it seems like lots of schools are doing 'cocoholo' against this education tax rather than considering paying tax  as a responsibility.   Besides this, by the existing education laws, every private school is supposed to  provide scholarships to at least 10%  of their total students (every school agrees to do this when they apply for approval). I have never seen this happens in practice.  The another way of considering this education tax waived could be provide more scholarship opportunity for needy students. 

they should pay taxes but that money should NOT go to their 'Sahid' (8000 their shahids) . Sahid should be for country not for any any particular party. May be for particular party but should be PAID 10 lakhs from party's dhukuti not from country dhukuti....Country is country. Mao is not country.

My parents had a hand time paying my bills when I was in school. May be your parents are ghus khooes like Babua bhaiya hand his daddy girija.

Just because he cant make govt schools compete with the private schools does not mean he has a right to impose a tax on education.

Its the same trick Babua bhaiya learnt from laloo prasad yadav. Earlier, he claimed that we cant have computers so lets have Nepali kagaj in Govt Schools and now impose tax on education.

so before going any further, my question is, "would you care or worry about paying taxes if you are about to be deported?"

My vote goes to Baburam Bhatarai..This private school has been riping of parents n country for years..its privately owned business and they should be paying tax

I bet most of you here in sajha, went to a private boarding school one time or the other. I also think the school made you competent enough for you to land here in the US. But, i do not mean that the government schools are bad. Yes, the private school system has become like a business but that does not mean they should be treated like 'businessman'. Instead Dr. BB should first try to show some sense of optimism by trying to upgrade the standard of the government schools (this is the backup plan). What if all the private schools in Nepal were to shut down? Would anyone of you in here want your son/daughter/relatives to go to the governement schools where they are asked to 'parade' for the MAOISTS? Atleast not me. "Imposing sudden uniformity in the basic education system may not be the correct answer at this point in time". I wonder if Dr. BB has the right backup plan coz anything is possible in Nepal.

PS: Which school do Dr. BB and company children/grandchildrens attend? Can someone shed some light over this issue?

I agree that students will lose. Most private schools are like industries - they will get into another business if they can't benefit well from schools. Aba Baburam comrade bhanya testai ho, afno karyakarta haru ta almost purai pagal chan, ani aru school haru lai ke nai ubho lagauna saklaan ra..

I will raise EST even at the cost of my post: Dr Bhattarai

Finance minister Dr Baburam Bhattarai has said he will not backtrack from his stance on the five percent Education Service Tax (EST) even if it means resigning from his post.

Speaking at a programme in Ratna Rajya Campus, Kathmandu, on Tuesday, Dr Bhattarai said the government is committed to raise the EST and if the schools do not comply with it this year, he would introduce more stringent measures in the next year’s budget. He added no one should oppose the EST as it was aimed at providing better education to students studying in government schools.

Minister Bhattarai said the EST was imposed to make up for the deficit in the budget for education as Rs 32 billion earmarked by the government for education sector is not enough.

What was wrong is raising a five percent tax for schools where the kids of the poor go, Bhattarai questioned.

Dr. Bhattarai had gone to the college to raise support for the Maoist affiliated student union ANNISU (Revolutionary) for the upcoming student elections.

Minister Bhattarai, who reached the campus in a private vehicle, said he had come to the college not as a minister, but as a student.

Meanwhile, education minister Renu Kumari Yadav has told school owners that the latter do not have to pay the EST.

Speaking to private school owners in Biratnagar on Monday minister Yadav said neither the registration would be cancelled nor the students would be deprived of taking the School Leaving Certificate (SLC) exams for not paying the EST, reports said.

Yadav assured the private school owners that the education ministry would communicate with the finance ministry to scrap the five percent EST on private schools. nepalnews.com ta Mar 17 09
