Maggie Doyne, 28, has been named the CNN Hero of the Year 2015. She is the third person from Nepal to win the prestigious award. Anuradha Koirala won the award in 2010 and Pusha Basnet in 2012. Maggie came to Nepal after her high school in 2005 and instantly fell in love with the country and the people.

She runs Kopila Valley School in Surkhet. Subhash Ghimire briefly talked to Maggie Doyne right after the award ceremony in New York, USA on Wednesday.

How do you feel about winning the CNN Hero of the Year 2015?

I am super excited. This is the best day ever of my life! I can't believe my name stands along with Anuradha Koirala and Pushpa Basnet.

What came to your mind when you first heard the news?

I simply could not believe it! I told my children how much I love them. I thank Nepal for welcoming me as one of her own daughters. We can make Nepal a much better place together.

Two of my girls were with me today. They are currently spending a semester in the United States. They can't stop smiling tonight. I am proud of them.

Have you had a chance to talk to your parents?

No, I haven't had a chance to talk to them. I hope they are proud of me.

The situation in Nepal is quite depressing, and you brought smiles in the face of millions of Nepalis.

My boys in Surkhet are lining up for cooking gas. We are all suffering. I just hope this award will also help bring awareness about Nepal's situation at international level.

What do you have to say to the Nepalis?

I simply cannot believe how much people rallied behind me. We all did this together. The security guy at the Tribhuvan International Airport recognized me during check-in and told that he voted for me. Taxi drivers in Kathmandu told the same. Everyone at CNN and all the CNN Top Ten Heroes are surprised by the energy and love of Nepali people on me. This is a humbling experience. I hope everyone is proud of our work in Surkhet.

What is next for you in Nepal?

I just hope Nepal continues in the path of peace. I hope we care for our children, provide love and education. I feel immensely proud to be welcomed by the country.

I will keep expanding Kopila Valley School in Surkhet. We all have to make Nepal the country that we can be. Everyone here loves Nepal. They all want to visit us. I will keep on helping build a brighter future for Nepali children.
